Large French Brown Glazed Terracotta Utility Jar

Large French glazed terracotta utility jar with a tall cylindrical body, heavy rolled rim and substantial applied side handle. Large earthenware vessels were working pieces in French households, used for storing and handling foods and other provisions. The rich brown glaze helped reduce absorption into the porous terracotta, while wheel marks and irregularities in the surface reflect its utilitarian construction.

MATERIALS: Glazed terracotta

CONDITION: Age and wear consistent with use, including glaze wear, surface variation and natural irregularities associated with utilitarian pottery.
